Motorcycle Fuel Tank Liner Removal

Restoration With Internal Nickel Plating

Old Liner Out
Original Paintwork Protected

If the liner inside your motorcycle fuel tank is lifting, bubbling, flaking or starting to fail, it doesn’t automatically mean the tank needs replacing or repainting.

At Motorcycle Dent Removal, we can remove old internal tank liners using specialist chemicals and a carefully controlled process designed to protect the original finish.

Once the old liner has been removed and the inside of the tank properly cleaned and prepared, we can then carry out our internal nickel plating treatment to give the tank a clean, durable internal finish.

Can An Old Tank Liner Be Removed Without Ruining The Paint?

That is the difficult part.

For owners of classic, rare or original motorcycles, that can be vital where keeping the factory paintwork matters just as much as sorting out the inside of the tank.

Fuel tank liners are designed to resist petrol and chemicals, so removing them is rarely quick or straightforward. Products strong enough to break down an old liner can also present a risk to the paintwork on the tank if they are not handled correctly.

This is why many workshops simply do not want to take the job on.

Our process is focused on removing the unwanted liner while taking great care to preserve the tank’s existing external finish.

Why Old Tank Liners Become A Problem

An ageing or deteriorating fuel tank liner can become a serious nuisance. Once a liner starts to break down, it may lift, bubble or come away from the inside of the tank.

Loose material and contamination can create problems elsewhere in the fuel system.

Removing the failed liner properly gives us the opportunity to get back to a clean internal surface before the tank receives further treatment.

A Specialist Labour Intensive Process

Removing an old liner is not a case of pouring in a chemical and leaving it to work.

Every tank is different, and the job can involve repeated chemical treatment, cleaning and inspection before the old coating has been completely removed.

It is a time consuming and labour- ntensive process, and great care has to be taken throughout. That is why tank liner removal is treated as a specialist service rather than a standard tank cleaning job.

Internal Nickel Plating

Once the old liner has been removed and the tank has been prepared, we can carry out our nickel plating process. Rather than replacing one liner with another coating, nickel plating creates a plated internal finish inside the fuel tank.

For owners already having dent removal or restoration work carried out, this can also form part of a wider Tank TLC service.

Empower
Growth

Because the condition of old liners varies so much, we quote each tank individually. If it can’t be saved without the paint, we’ll tell you before we start.

The amount of work required depends on factors such as the type of liner, how badly it has deteriorated and how easily it can be removed.

Send us clear photographs of the tank and, where possible, pictures showing the condition inside the tank, and we can advise you on the likely cost.
